To qualify for this job, you must meet the following requirements:
- Must love cats and be passionate about helping animals and supporting our mission
- Must be 21 years or older and have your Alcohol Awareness Training card
- Must be responsible and dependable (transportation, etc.)
- Must be able to read/write English and do basic math
- Must be fully vaccinated (2 weeks post 2nd dose)
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check
- Must be able to be in constant contact with cats (no allergies)
- Must be able to endure frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, stooping, carrying, and reaching.
Preferred/Recommended Skills/Training/Knowledge:
- Pet CPR/First Aid Certification
- Cat Friendly Veterinary Advocate Training by American Association of Feline Practitioners
- Minimum 1 year of professional cat experience (shelter, rescue, veterinary office, etc.)
Desired Skills/Qualities/Abilities:
- Detail-oriented – you notice the little things and act on them

- Be comfortable with public speaking, patient with children, and have a paw-sitive attitude

Cat Caretaker/Guardian and Purrista Job Description:
This is a tipped position. Dress code is an KKCC shirt or cat themed clothes. No inappropriate clothing and dress comfortably, you will be moving a lot throughout the day. This is a part-time position, which may include weekends with some opportunities to take on other shifts. Our hours are 11a-6p Thurs-Tues. Your first shift will be a full day of shadowing.
There will be 2 forms you will need to complete – an NDA and an employment contract. You are responsible for providing support to all areas of the business; this includes the Café (food/drinks & retail), the full Cat Lounge/Retreat space, and back of the house areas including the restroom and back hallway. You are expected to not use your phone for personal use while on shift.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Café (Food/drinks & Retail):
- Actively greet & engage customers in a friendly and professional manner throughout their visit. Assist and answer any customer questions. Ensure customers are having a great time. Serve customers promptly and courteously. Provide friendly, professional, and compassionate customer service with maturity and good judgment
- Process sales transactions of all goods using the point of sale system
- Check customers in using the scheduling software
- Ensure everyone has signed the required waiver in the waiver system prior to entering the cat lounge. Ensure rules are understood before customers enter the lounge
- Prepare drinks made to order
- Keep all areas clean and organized as per outlined protocols throughout the day
- Monitor and keep coffee machines stocked and clean
- Maintain daily and weekly cleaning protocols outlined
- Keep all products stocked and displays organized
- Coordinate with the volunteers working in the cat lounge area as needed to ensure customers have the best experience possible, and cats are given the utmost care
- Notify owner of any issues or concerns immediately
- Keep bathroom stocked with soap, toilet paper and paper towels. Keep bathroom clean per outlined protocols
- Take trash to the bin as needed
- Spot clean as necessary
- Assist with special events
- Proactively (without prompting) complete tasks. There really is no downtime with the amount of cleaning, etc. that needs to be done constantly
- Cat Lounge/Retreat
- Monitor customers in the cat lounge to ensure cats are being interacted with appropriately and guests are complying with rules. Notify owner of any issues or concerns
- Actively engage customers in the cat lounge, assist and answer any questions. Share cat facts, cat personality traits, chat about guests’ lives, ensure guests get a chance to interact with several cats during their visit. Guide guests how to get the best out of their experience (ex. lap cats, certain preferred toys, etc.). Play and connect with kitties, make a memorable emotional connection with each guest (create a guest experience). Tell your favorite KKCC stories, take photos for guests, give tips on how to best engage with kitties
- Provide a safe, clean, organized, and pleasant experience for cats and customers
- Follow and maintain cleaning, sanitation, and disease prevention protocols in order to provide a safe, clean environment in the cat lounge and retreat. This includes a LOT of litter box and other mess cleaning
- Provide cats with appropriate food and water. Know that each cat has an individual personality, likes, and dislikes
- Provide cats with mental stimulation and enrichment, social interaction with humans, and interaction with other cats in foster care
- Monitor health of cats and rapidly identify any health issues and report to owner
- Monitor behavior of cats and rapidly identify any issues that may require special action and report to owner
- Ensure that every kitty is healthy, stress-free, and happy
- Provide basic grooming services to cats as needed. (Brushing, nail trimming, etc.)
- Facilitate good adoption matches through conversation and help set realistic expectations of time, care, and financial commitment
- Educate on adoption process through rescue partner to customers upon request
- Assist with photos and writing cat profiles for use in the cafe, online and social media
- Spot clean as necessary
- Ability to handle cats of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately
- Proactively recognize and defuse any negative cat or human behaviors or interactions
